I remember this movie being set in Cambodia. However, I've heard it
was about Vietnam. Which is it?

It's not about Vietnam, it is Vietnam. ;-)

Willard was ordered into Cambodia to find Col. Kurtz.

So were depictions of Vietnam a significant part of the film, or were
most of the outdoor scenes set in Cambodia?

Most of the outdoor scenes were set in Nam. IIRC the bridge that the US built
every day and Charlie blew up every night (where there was nobody in charge)
was near the border of Vietnam and Cambodia, and everything after that was
presumed to be Cambodia.

Explain why they had to hire Col Kilgore Trout to surf our boy in at the
mouth of the river when the USO chicks where able to get in for a show
much farther up that same river?

The girls weren't travelling by boat.

In fact, the whole structure of the movie is a fictional stretch done
to mirror Conrad -- They could have chopped Martin Sheen a lot closer
a lot quicker, or parachuted him in.

All I'm saying is that it doesn't make a lick of sense.

Heart of Darkness doesn't have this problem.

But perhaps he needs to make it a boat journey so he can understand what
to do at the end. It's just the major base *after* the big deal at the
mouth of the river doesn't make sense.

Most of the outdoor scenes were set in the Philippines, which look
nothing like Vietnam.

They were SHOT in the Philippines. They were SET in Vietnam and Cambodia. If
they were set in the Philippines, the fact that it didn't look like Vietnam
wouldn't have been a problem.

north vietnamese violated vietnamese territory to send troops and
supplies down south.
americans also carried out a covert war in cambodia.
neither nation was officially in cambodia but they were in cambodia.
the war had spilt over national boundaries.

cambodia was also a more backward, sparsely populated nation so it was
an ideal macho-man utopia for milius's fantasies.
