You cannot vote Vertigo best movie of all time without a gun pointed to your head.
If you let America vote, you wouldn't even find Vertigo on the list.

Shouldn't Scottie have recognized immediately that Judy and Madeleine were the same person since they both had the same eyebrows?

The opening scene is ridiculous. There's the policeman telling James Stewart to "give me your hand" when he hasn't got anything to hold onto with his other hand, so no wonder he plunges off the roof. And as there was no-one else around, how the hell did Stewart get down anyway, with the guttering he was hanging onto on the verge of breaking away. All we get is a cop-out fade-out. Oh well, I suppose Hitch would have said "It's only a movie" and left it at that. I still think it was a mistake to reveal half-way through that it was all a murder plot, rather than leave the revelation to the end, which is what happened in the book the movie was based on. Anyway, here's that opening scene as a reminder of Stewart dangling off the roof for who knows how long after the fade-out ...

Does VERTIGO remind us that the distinction between passion and obsession, between real life and dreams, and between creation and destruction is finer than we realize?:

- By the film's conclusion, Hitchcock has carefully guided us to a place where he is at last able to make the point he has been aiming for all along: the fine distinction between passion and obsession, between real life and dreams, between creation and destruction. The death of Judy at the end makes real the fake suicide that was staged for Scottie's benefit earlier. What began as make-believe has taken on a terrible life of its own and become reality, a reality born of the destructive potential when love overpowers reason.
