Tom Selleck had to turn down the role of Indiana Jones because he was
under contract to play TV's Magnum PI.

Pierce Brosnan originally had to turn down the role of James Bond
because he was contracted to play TV's Remington Steele. He did
eventually take the role later though.

On the topic of James Bond, this is supposedly a list of every actor
who turned down the role:

Sounds like Hollywood hype. In any case... Everybody agrees, at least in
hindsight, Harrison Ford was the best possible Indiana Jones.
